Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park: An Island Sanctuary

Jozani Forest is the green heart of Unguja, representing a prehistoric era when the entire island was covered in dense, tropical greenery. As a officially protected National Park and a key part of the Jozani-Chwaka Bay UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it serves as a critical refuge for the island’s unique flora and fauna.

A Biodiversity Hotspot The forest is world-renowned for being the home of the Kirk’s Red Colobus monkey (Piliocolobus kirkii). Unlike other monkeys, these vibrant, red-backed primates are endemic to Zanzibar, meaning they exist nowhere else on the planet. The park also provides habitat for the Sykes’ monkey, the elusive Zanzibar leopard (long thought extinct), and over 40 species of birds.

Unique Ecosystems The landscape of Jozani is divided into several distinct zones:

• Groundwater Forest: A lush, shaded canopy dominated by giant mahogany trees, oil palms, and pandanus.

• Coral Rag Forest: Resilient vegetation growing directly out of ancient coral limestone.

• Mangrove Ecosystem: To the east, the forest transitions into a vast mangrove swamp. This area acts as a natural bridge between the land and the sea, with a network of salt-tolerant trees that protect the coastline from erosion and provide a nursery for local marine life.

Natural Significance Beyond its beauty, Jozani is a vital carbon sink and a primary water catchment area for the island. Its conservation efforts are deeply integrated with the surrounding local communities, making it a leading example of environmental stewardship in East Africa.
